Lawyers LEAN LAWYERS obtain B Corp certification.

We are proud to announce that LEAN LAWYERS is officially a Certified B Corporation (B Corp). As a B Corp, we are now part of a global community of companies that meet high standards for social impact and sustainability.

From the moment we launched our law firm in 2016 in a basement in Utrecht's city centre, we have sought to make deliberate choices in every aspect of our business. To be a good employer, focus on sustainability, local and sustainable procurement, donations to good causes, our LEAN on Me Initiative, and being the first law firm in the Netherlands (or even worldwide?) to operate climate-positive. From day one we do it differently.

As a B Corp, we join a growing group of companies that are shaping the global movement for a fairer and more sustainable economy. Other examples of B Corps are Patagonia, Ben & Jerry’s, SPA, Dopper, Fairphone, Ace & Tate, Veja, Seepje and Tony’s Chocolonely.

LEAN LAWYERS has completed the B Impact Assessment with a score of 88.2. A score of 80 or higher is required to become a B Corp. For illustration, non-B Corps score on average around 50 points, and the average in the Netherlands is around 83. In Europe, only about fifteen law firms currently have a B Corp certification.

You don't get the B Corp certificate for a packet of butter, but after a long and intensive process which, for us, from start to finish, took about one and a half to two years.

It's more than just a certificate; the bar is high. Companies with a B Corp certificate must consider the impact it has on their employees, customers, suppliers, society and the environment.

It was also a good moment to take a hard look at yourself as a company: What are you good at and where can you improve? Becoming a B Corp is not the end point either: it is the confirmation that we are on the right track, but we will of course continue to devote ourselves to increasing our positive impact on people, society and the environment.thus. But that's not all. The certification provides a valuable framework that helps to stimulate further improvement in all aspects of our company. Therefore, as LEAN, we will continue to work on improving our impact for the recertification in 2026 and beyond.

“Obtaining the B Corp certification is an important milestone for us as LEAN LAWYERS, but also an obligation to continue improving. Our dream? In the next certification round more than 100 points to be earned and then slowly build up to a score such as e.g. the Dutch Tony Chocoloney or the American Patagonia. The latter achieved as many as 151 points in 2023.. How do we get there? A little better every day, we've been calling it the create-measure-learn principle since the start..”
